i have a stl file from a 3D scan and it is just a surface modell. For my work i need a solid modell. In some other forum they told meshlab can create solid modells from surface modells or stl files. Some users says something about a make solid tool, but i cannot find it. I have several .stl files that I would like to convert to .ply by calling meshlabserver from the command line. When I go the straightforward way > meshlabserver -i cube-binary.stl -o cube.ply (where cube.stl is a sample file given below with 12 faces), the resulting mesh has 12 faces and 36 vertices I am trying to convert the STL file of a wing with split winglets into a solid body to mesh in ICEM or Gambit. STL format specifies both, binary and ASCII representation. Because ASCII STL files can be very large, binary version is more common because they are more compact. ASCII STL begins with solid, continues with number of triangles, and file ends with endsolid. Binary STL contains 80-character long header, 4 bytes integer that indicates number of triangular facets, data describing each.
